Embracing Failure as a Steppingstone

I am incredibly excited to be joining DMSS as Head Coach and to become part of this fantastic swimming community. As I step into this role, I want to share something that I believe is fundamental to success in both sport and life: the ability to embrace failure and the importance of being truly passionate about the things we do.

Failure as a Steppingstone

Failure is a vital and constructive part of every exceptional athlete's journey. Elite performers view setbacks as valuable opportunities for learning and growth. Instead of allowing failures to define them, they find joy in competition and see each setback as a chance to improve. Every new day is an opportunity to rise, push forward, and progress, fully understanding that failure is not a roadblock but a steppingstone toward success.

Passion for the Sport

Having a genuine love for swimming is essential for anyone aspiring to greatness. This sport is demanding—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Those who embrace it wholeheartedly may not always collect medals or titles, but they gain invaluable experiences and lifelong connections.

I had the privilege of working under one of the greatest swim coaches of all time, Coach Eddie Reese, and something he often said has always resonated with me: "Take care of yourself and those around you, and the rest will take care of itself." This philosophy reminds us that success isn’t just about personal achievements—it’s about building a strong, supportive environment where both individual and team growth can thrive.

As I begin this journey with DMSS, I look forward to fostering a culture of resilience and passion—where every swimmer is encouraged to challenge themselves, support their teammates, and embrace every step of their journey, including the setbacks.

Yours in Swimming,

Coach Colter
